Lagos Govt demolishes Agboju Market in Festac for being too rough

Some traders affected by the ongoing demolition of Agboju Market in Festac Town, Lagos, have blamed market leaders for “insincerity” over the exercise. Bulldozers moved in on Friday and began pulling down the structures in the market just as the traders started displaying their goods for sale. Some of the affected traders said the issue of the demolition had been ongoing between the state government and the traders. They, however, expressed shock over the exercise which occurred before the seven- day quit notice issued them expired. Mr. Uzo Thomas, trader, said they assumed the demolition would be done on Monday after the notice elapsed on Sunday. “To our surprise, Friday morning, we were displaying our goods, we just started hearing, ‘pack, pack,’ we thought it was a joke. “Before we knew it, bulldozers started bringing everything down,” he said. Also, Mrs Anulika Chukwu, trader, said last Thursday, officials of Amuwo Odofin Local Government came to warn the traders not to sell on the walk ways, which they complied with. “If we had known beforehand, I wouldn’t have spent the money I had yesterday buying goods for sale,” she lamented. However, some other traders said that the land where the market was situated was a buffer zone, with pipelines running underneath and electric cables overhead. Mr Olawale Ashakaba, trader, said: “This is a Federal Government property, there are pipelines running under here. “I believe there’s something our leaders are not telling us,” he said. Another trader, Mrs Blessing Ogomchi, said: “Nobody knows exactly what is going on or what is going to happen. “The leaders haven’t even called a meeting to tell traders what is going on. “If indeed there’s going to be a new market, how long will it take to be completed; how many months or years?” The Iyaloja General of Amuwo Market, Mrs Osinatu Adebayo, refuted the allegations, saying there was no foul play. “No. No, it’s not true. “The problem is that the market is too rough and the state government called us to say they want to rebuild it to a modern market. “They would have finished building it but we’ve been delaying and begging for more time, ‘please allow us to sell for Christmas’ or ‘please let us sell for Easter’. According to her, buying and selling will continue as usual, once the site has been cleared.

2019: Buhari Campaign Organisation to embark on ward-to-ward mobilisation

The Buhari Campaign Organisation and Empowerment (BCO) in Bayelsa says plan is underway to embark on ward-to-ward mobilisation for the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Mr Ezekiel Ogbianko, Bayelsa Liaison Officer of BCO, said on Tuesday in Yenagoa that over 20, 000 committed persons have so far been registered as members to promote the good governance of the APC led administration.

On the inauguration of the Rivers-Bayelsa Liaison Office of BCO on Nov. 14, in Port Harcourt, Ogbianko said the event was a welcome development and called for more support for President Buhari. Ogbianko, who is also the Chairman, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) in Bayelsa, said the support for Buhari was necessary due to his numerous achievements not only in the area of agriculture but in all sectors.

“The Anchor Borrower Programme is one of them and every farmer across the country has benefitted from it; we must support President Buhari to finish his good work. “The BCO in Bayelsa is committed and we are going to embark on ward-to-ward mobilisation to preach the gospel of Buhari, the APC Presidential Candidate for 2019 elections. “We have found it necessary that it is good to allow the present government to complete what they have started.

“Especially in the fight against corruption, infrastructure development, youth empowerment and job creation through agriculture, among others. “What we want in this county is only good governance and not looters; we need sustainable development in all sectors for the good of the nation. It is high time we stop the primitive methods of election of violence and killings. According to him, politicians must play by the rules of the game and must know that the country, Nigeria has come of age. “We must say no to political violence, tribalism and selfish interest which remain the primitive ways of politics.

He, however, advised the youth to desist from thuggery by not allowing themselves to be used as instruments of disorder during and after elections. “We must learn how to support peaceful campaign and elections,’’ Ogbianko stressed. (NAN)

If I were Nigerian, I would vote for Atiku Abubakar – Ex-Ugandan VP

Former Vice President of Uganda, from 2003-2011, Dr. Gilbert Bukenya, has said that if he were a Nigerian, that he would vote for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections, Atiku Abubakar.

Dr. Bukenya who has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Makrere also said that he would vote for Atiku Abubakar without hesitation or reservation because, “on an individual basis, he is unequivocally the best candidate.” According to the former Ugandan Vice President, Abubakar is so passionate about the common good of the ordinary Nigerian that he never ceases to say “my people.” Dr. Bukenya said he was left with so much to contemplate, during his encounter with Abubakar, that he never stopped thinking of how Nigerians are so lucky having the person of Atiku Abubakar as a Nigerian. He said when he heard Abubakar had joined the presidential race, he immediately thought,

“what an extraordinary opportunity Nigerians have.” Below is his statement: “I have rubbed shoulders with several African Presidents and Vice-Presidents. I have participated in many conversations with these men – both formally and informally. Some of these conversations have attracted attention and many have been amusing – but very few have included intellectual and analytical discussions of substantive issues. Seldom in these conversations does one hear about the conditions and needs of the country’s poor. In 2005, I met a man at his residence in Abuja, Nigeria, who surprised me. He welcomed me with a guarded smile and went straight to business. He was smart, eloquent and very knowledgeable. I was struck by his consistent reference to “my people.” He was so concerned about the poor. He discussed impacts of educational injustices and weakened agricultural practices in Nigeria. Our conversation ended and we parted. While I left him with some traditional Ugandan gifts, he left me with much to contemplate. This Nigerian “big man” had sounded so earnest and completely devoted to “his people”.

Surely, I was surprised and he has left a lasting impression. We have remained friends over the years and I have observed his business and political dealings over time. I have noted the tremendous value that this man, Atiku Abubakar, has contributed to Nigeria’s development. He has been a philanthropic leader and a determined and passionate advocate for improving the national educational system. I heard recently with great pleasure that he is running for the Presidency in the upcoming Presidential elections.

I immediately thought, “what an extraordinary opportunity Nigerians have to elect Atiku as president of Nigeria.” If I were Nigerian, I would vote for Atiku Abubakar without hesitation or reservation. On an individual basis, he is unequivocally the best candidate.”

Second Class Chief kidnapped in Plateau

Jos – The Second Class Chief in Shendam local government area of Plateau State, the Long Dorok, HRH David Dongbam has been kidnapped, the State Police Command confirmed.

The monarch was said to have been abducted from his home by yet to be known people.

The are no details about the incident yet but the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mathias Tyopev said, “On the 19/11/2018 at about 10pm, the Plateau State Police Command, Jos received an information that unknown gunmen stormed the residence of the Long Dorok HRH Engr. David Isah Dongbam, the Second Class Chief of Dorok Kingdom of Shendam Local Government Area and kidnapped him to unknown destination.

“After the receipt of the information, the Command immediately formed a search and rescue team which is working assiduously to rescue the Paramount Ruler unhurt. The Command shall update members of the public as soon as new information crops in please.”

Nigeria replaces Togo as chairman ECOWAS group at UN

Nigeria has replaced the Republic of Togo as chairman of the 15-nation sub-regional group, Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS), at the United Nations.

The Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, Amb. Tijjani Bande, took over from his Togolese counterpart, Amb. FrancK Kpayedo at the sub-regional group’s meeting in New York.

Bande said Nigeria had always worked with other member-states of the group as brothers, including agreements on candidatures at the UN without conflicts. He noted that on July 28 at Lome, President Muhammadu Buhari was elected chairman of ECOWAS, recalling Buhari was very thankful to his colleagues who urged him to take the lead for this year. “Nigeria wants to make sure that we continue to work for the stability and general wellbeing of the sub-region and the region, and as much as possible, we should speak with one voice.

“We should also speak with one voice outside the continent because West Africa works collaboratively with all other sub-regions on the continent. “Nigeria will do the best it can to strengthen the bonds of friendship within the region and do the work we are here to do at this very important platform in a better way and with more assured results for the benefit of all.

“The West African sub-region has seen better coordination than most sub-regions that operate here at the UN. “We have dealt, like at the ECOWAS Commission back home, with matters, particularly to do with stability of the region to the satisfaction of all, even for difficult situations.” Bande pledged that Nigeria would continue to do all it could to help coordinate the Group’s work adding, throughout its tenure, the country would provide leadership on all issues.

Speaking with NAN, the Nigerian envoy said it was a standard practice that ambassadors at the UN would chair the Group just as their heads of state. According to him, since Buhari is chairing the ECOWAS heads of state, it follows that Nigeria at the UN should chair the group also. “The basic issue is simply to consult with our colleagues from the sub-region to see how the agenda of ECOWAS can be brought and made alive at the UN. “Our issues are peace and security, development, technology, agriculture, and speaking also in line with African region because ECOWAS coordinates what we do but we also work very well with the African Group here.

“President Buhari’s discussion when he took over in Lome, was the same thing we have been discussing, whether as it relates to Guinea or whatever country. “As soon as there is an understanding within ECOWAS, we take it here at the UN as part of what we should also push forward; we have a very strong group of ambassadors here.

“They (ECOWAS ambassadors) are very clear and they are also very strong within the UN’s various platforms, pushing our issues in terms of our priorities; this is what we intend to do as Buhari is also doing at the level of heads of state.” The ambassador of Togo, Kpayedo, thanked his colleagues for their support during his one-year tenure, and pledged support to Bande to succeed. The ECOWAS Permanent Observer to the UN, Mr Kone Tanou, congratulated Kpayedo on a successful tenure and commended the ambassadors for their trust in Nigeria’s envoy to lead the Group.

“In few years of service in New York, you have shown great interest on multilateral diplomacy by investing yourself in preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention, peacebuilding and mediation,” Tanou said of Bande. Amb. Mariame Fofana, Deputy Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to the UN, commended Togo for its coordination of the group, and congratulated Nigeria for assuming the Group’s head, pledging her country’s support. The representative of the Permanent Mission of Ghana, Solomon Korbieh, said

“Nigeria is the pre-eminent power house in the sub-region”, adding in chairing the Group, “Nigeria will make us proud and also carry Africa’s light forward”. (NAN)

DSS invitation: Clear your name before campaigning for APC, Frank fires Oshiomhole Read more

Immidiate past Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Timi Frank, has asked the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to clear his name in the reported allegation of bribery and corruption during the party’s primary election.

Frank said until proper investigation and clearance is given to Comrade Oshiomhole, it will amount to immorality for him to criticize the opposition party and its presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s policy documents.

The former APC chieftain was reacting in a statement on Tuesday to a comment credited to Oshiomhole where he said Atiku’s policy document, especially on the issue of creating jobs can not be trusted.

According to Frank, it is shameful for APC National Chairman to start talking while Nigerians are still waiting for the outcome of his quizzing by the Director of State Security Service (DSS). While querying Oshimhole’s integrity in public service, Frank said the APC National Chairman should be worried that his National Working Committee (NWC) colleagues and some prominent chieftains of his party, even from his own state and zone, were calling for his resignation. The Bayelsa born political activist, however revealed that Adams Oshiomhole’s current saga will be a major campaign issue as the country move towards the 2019 general elections unless the party relieves him of his office or make public the outcome of his interrogation by the DSS.

In his opinion, Frank said: “President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim of fighting corruption has now been defeated by the singular act of allowing the likes of Oshiomhole and other alleged corrupt politicians around him. “As it is now, Comrade Oshimhole does not have moral right to castigate anybody. His comments on Atiku’s policy documents and his adamant that Senate President Bukola Saraki should resign as Chairman of National Assembly is diversionary because Nigerians will not forget his ordeal in the hands of DSS.

Abuja – Sen. Ali Ndume has said that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, will be a walk-over for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections.

Ndume, Chairman, Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service in Abuja. He said the All Progressives Congress(APC)) was not perturbed by Atiku’s emergence, adding that he was not a threat to the party in any way.

According to him, the records are there for Nigerians to judge. “Next election is a walk-over with Atiku.

“We were anxious when PDP was to organise their primaries but when Atiku emerged, we were glad for so many reasons.

“Atiku was our Vice President for eight years and he was one of the most powerful vice presidents we ever had and we know what he did.

“He was under former President Obasanjo and in his book “Under My Watch”, he voluntarily described who the Presidential candidate is.

“We all know where we were and where we are now. Had it been they are presenting a new person, someone that Nigerians do not know, that may have been a threat but with Atiku, no way. “Let us analyse it. North West is where the president comes from and we are banking on our highest votes there and if you go to any part of the North West, you will realise that his popularity is unprecedented.

“Then if you go to North East, Buhari is a moral obligation,” he said. He expressed disappointment that Atiku, in spite of coming from the North East, there was no record of him sending relief materials to people displaced by Boko Haram.

“We have to vote for him (Buhari) because we know where we were with the government of PDP in my state, including my local government, my town and even my house were taken over by Boko Haram.

“It was the government of President Muhammadu Buhari that salvaged the situation and now my people are back to our local government.


“Those that are trying to take over from him or compete with him were there before.

“Atiku was the vice president and one of the richest Nigerians ever, but I cannot remember Atiku taking even a bag of rice to our people that are suffering in Borno and he wants to be our president.

“For me, this election is between Nigerians and the Nigerian corrupt.

“Atiku’s background is known. All the show of money from him, Saraki and others is what they got from politics, people’s money,” he said. On fears that election campaign might be marred by violence, Ndume said APC would not be part of such. He added that President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the National Chairman of the party had admonished party faithful to shun violence, name calling but to focus on issues.

“Yesterday (Sunday) when the `Next Level’ was launched by our presidential candidate and the president of the country, he specifically said we should go on with the campaign decently. “That means no name calling, no insult, but concentrate on issues and during our convention, our chairman clearly stated that our campaign is going to be different.

“This is the first time APC government is campaigning for the second tenure so we want to campaign on issues and ideas.

“We do not want to campaign on personalities and we do not want to be involved in name calling as PDP is desperately trying to do.

“We will not join issues with them. They can only fight themselves,” he said. The lawmaker warned Nigerians against voting PDP, saying it had nothing to offer. He said “PDP is not new to Nigerians. They have a product that is known to Nigerians, a product that Nigerians rejected four years ago for obvious reasons.

“Now we have a candidate that the marketer of that product had rejected. “We know what they did and as I said, we have been cautioned not to campaign on persons but then you have to speak the truth.” (NAN)

God's Solution to Fear and Anxiety

How to face our fear and anxiety is clearly laid out in scripture.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7
Everyone has fears, everyone becomes anxious, and everyone experiences very stressful moments in their life. Just because someone is a Christian does not exempt them from the stressful events or from the effects that fear and anxiety can produce in their life. For instance, medical science has been saying for a long time that stress, fear, and anxiety are very harmful to the body because they destroy a person’s immune system. So, the more that someone worries about things that they often cannot change, the greater will be the negative effects on their life. Stressful events are more than able to take a person’s focus off of God and to place it on their difficult circumstances. So, what we want to do is to see what God’s Word says about how a believer can actually win their battle over fear and anxiety.

What does it really mean to be “anxious”?
The word “anxious” means to become troubled, unsettled, and deeply concerned about something. It means to constantly be worrying about something that most of the time that we cannot change. It refers to the person who seems to worry about everything. Something happens in their life and they begin to worry about it so much that it consumes their thought life. They cannot rest for worrying about something. It affects their sleep and their eating, and the fear of something negative that may happen begins to control their life.

Several years ago my oldest son was working in a very dangerous part of the world. He had to travel every day on what was considered at that time as the most dangerous 10 miles of road in the world. Obviously, it was something that made our family very anxious. However, it was during that time that God began to teach me about Philippians 4:6-7 and it became one of my two life verses. What I learned was how to handle that which made me anxious.

So, what is God’s solution to fear and anxiety in our life?
God’s solution is simple. It is to bring our concerns to Him in prayer and He will provide His peace in our life – which He did for me about my son’s daily safety. These verses do not say that God will change our difficult and stressful circumstances, but rather that God will provide an inner and supernatural peace that will “guard” and protect our heart and mind so that our difficult circumstances will no longer consume our life. Rather than always being anxious about my son’s safety, I simply began to pray each morning for God to protect him. Rather than worrying about something that I could not change or control, I began committing my son into God’s care each day. Once that happened, God’s supernatural peace began to deeply influence my heart and mind and helped me to rest in His control over all things.

What does it mean to “guard” our heart and mind?
The word “guard” means to keep someone safe with a military guard. Everywhere that the President of the United States goes, he always has people guarding him. That is the idea with the word “guard”. It is knowing that God will always protect the believer’s heart and mind so that worrying and being afraid will not consume their life. Some people seem to worry about everything in life. Almost anything can make them anxious, and as soon as something goes wrong, they begin to worry. What that anxiety does is to immediately take their heart and mind off of God. In reality, God is always the believer’s solution to anxiety and fear. Jesus provided a great encouragement in Matthew 6:25-26:

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

So, what God does when the believer comes to Him in prayer is to “guard” their heart, protect their heart, and shield their heart from things that He knows can hurt them. He is always wanting us to trust Him in every difficult circumstance of our life.

Can fear or anxiety be a good thing?
It is important to understand that some level of fear and anxiety often can be a good thing because it forces us to be more careful and to be much more cautious. I love to work with wood and have been making things for over 40 years. Several years ago I was working next to a wood machine, my hand too close to it and part of my thumb was cut off. So, in my case, having a healthy fear is a very good thing. It is the fear of what the saw can do to me that actually keeps me safe. So, what we want to see in this series is how God actually uses the things that make us afraid as His supernatural tools to strengthen our life to trust Him in every circumstance of our life. Coming to God in the midst of troubling and stressful situations is always God’s solution to fear and anxiety.

HOW TO FORGIVE THOSE WHO HURT YOU

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32
Is this true for you? – someone at the church you attend bothers you so much that sometimes you would just rather stay home from church!

Does an “enemy” keep you away from church?
The day before He died, Jesus told His disciples that the most important command He was giving them was to love each other (John 15:12-17). During the whole final evening with them, He was preparing them for life after His death, resurrection, and ascension to Heaven (John 13-17). He had kept them together as His disciples for the past three years, and now they needed to know how they could remain together even though they would be spread to different parts of the world. Jesus’ answer was love for one another, which would unite them.

We also need help in loving each other, even when there are disagreements among us in the church. The disciples had missed Jesus’ point so often, argued with one another and hoped to gain advantage over one another. (Luke 22:24-30). Without Him walking with them, would selfishness and bitterness divide them? Not if they listened to what He said. He told His disciples they must always forgive each other, and this is what we, too, must do. We must not allow anger and bitterness to grow. When that happens, we become ineffective witnesses for Him.

How am I to forgive another Christian who hurts me?
Jesus was committing His disciples to one another as an eternal family. This means a few things:

First, it's pretty much impossible to avoid offending others in this life, so we should not pretend we're never offensive. Siblings don't always get along. But they never stop being family. What does it take to maintain peace? You have to go to someone who feels wronged—even if you don't know what you did wrong. Jesus even gave this priority over our worship in Matthew 5:23-24.

Second, because we know we've done things that give others reason to be offended, forgive others. They may not even know what they did wrong. Go to them. Be persistent and patient. (Matthew 18:15-22) Jesus never runs out of forgiveness for us; we have to be the same way.

Why should I forgive, even when they are not sorry?
One of my dear friends was the victim of a conspiracy in her family. Divorced and raising two children on her own had made life a struggle, but then her father and younger sister agreed to bypass her in the inheritance of some family property. It caused her to curse and forsake her family for years. She even emigrated to another country in order to make an irreversible break in her family relationships.

But then, something happened to change her mind. She found Jesus. It was a few years before she reconciled with her family. They didn't recompense her for the lost property or years of hard work. But when God changed her life, He gave her first the desire, then later, the actual power, to forgive. Looking back, she now sees clearly how unforgiveness is really what hurt her and cost her the most. It really wasn't until she released her hold on it that she herself was free.

When Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15 that we cannot be forgiven if we do not forgive others, He was telling us two things: 1) not forgiving someone is disobedience to Him, and 2) we cannot see our own need for forgiveness if we keep anger and bitterness in our hearts. In essence, forgiving someone is more about our relationship with Jesus than with that person.

How do we forgive when we do not feel like doing so? Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling. We must choose to obey. It may be that we must say to Jesus, “I do not want to forgive because that makes what they did right, and it was not right! But I want to be near You more than I want to keep this anger, so I choose to forgive. Help me, Lord Jesus!” Then, the next time you remember what they did or you see them at church or anywhere else, you can simply say to Jesus, “I have given this to You, I will not take it back.” It will not be long before you realize you are free from the slavery of what this person did. You are free from anger and bitterness. You are free to do or say whatever Jesus asks you to say to them with peace in your heart (Philippians 4:7, and Luke 12:11-12).

Pray this week:
Lord Jesus, I have trouble forgiving ___ in my church. I choose to obey You because I need Your peace more than I need proof of being right or even worldly justice. I give this situation into Your hands; help me to leave it with You. Help me also to speak Your words to them so we may be reconciled to each other for the work of Your kingdom.
