God’s Holiness

"The LORD reigns, the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned above the cherubim, the earth quakes! The LORD is great in Zion, and He is exalted above all the peoples." – Psalm 99:1-2 NASB

Every day, millions of people take the Lord’s name in vain with cursing and ridicule. Even many who say they love God think nothing of ignoring Him or reinterpreting His Word to satisfy their own interests.

But the Bible warns us to remember that He is Holy and Lord of all the earth. Instead of taking Him for granted, we are to “tremble” before Him. We are to be in awe of Him and realize that the earth shakes at His presence. His name is great and awesome!

While remembering this reverent attitude, we also need to remember that God desires to have a personal relationship with each of us. The amazing thing is that He wants to speak to us, just like He spoke to Moses, Aaron, and Samuel (vs. 6-8).

These men were just human beings, yet they acknowledged God’s holiness. They made mistakes, but God forgave their sins. They feared Him. And because they so honored Him, He blessed them and granted them a special relationship with Him.

Don’t take God for granted, but realize just Who He is. Take His words seriously. Worship Him. As the psalmist wrote, “Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His holy hill, for the Lord our God is holy” (v. 9). In that worship, draw closer to Him into intimate fellowship. Seek to be changed into a vessel for His Spirit. Be ready to impact others with the Gospel.

Prayer

Father, thank You for forgiving my sins. I owe everything to You. Help me to honor You and keep Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Three Temptations We Face When Helping Others

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted...

Galatians 6:1-5

When we carry each other’s burdens, Satan loves to whisper, distract, and throw temptations at us. As we help others, we must be mindful of our responses so we don’t become ineffective counselors, caregivers, and people-helpers.

Here are three temptations you might face when helping others – and what to do about them.

The Temptation to Despair

She lost her husband unexpectedly. I didn’t know it until we met, but she was an immigrant with no family in the country. She was working with a fertility doctor to conceive their first child, and her husband’s salary paid their bills. When her husband’s heart stopped, she felt like her hope died.

As we sat together, she cried, “Lord, why?!” I shared Scripture. I prayed with her. I said the right words, but after our session, I began to cry hot tears to the Lord. I questioned, “Lord, why?! Where is her hope?!” I was tempted to believe that nothing we could do would be enough.

Quickly, deep in my spirit, I heard Him: “If you don’t know where her hope comes from, you’re going to have to hush, Haley.” The Lord was her hope. If I was going to guide her to that truth, I had to believe it myself. We began leaning into the God of all comfort instead of leaning away from Him in despair.

What to do: Stand on the hope of Christ. Through Him, every situation has the opportunity to be redeemed, redirected, or restored. There’s always hope. Be convinced of it. When we counsel others, we have the opportunity to practice standing on hope unseen.

“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23)

The Temptation to Get Angry

She brought her husband, two teenagers, and preschooler in for “family counseling.” She explained the family dynamics that brought them to counseling. With respect, but definite exhaustion, she detailed how she did everything in the home. She had a full time job, cooked, cleaned, helped kids with homework, got them to bed at night and up for school every morning. She explained her husband didn’t have a job and sat in his bedroom playing video games all day.

As I watched him for a sign of remorse (that I didn’t see), I got angry. Over a few sessions, I used counseling techniques to help him realize how I perceived he was failing his family. Exasperated, I asked my supervisor for the right words to get through to him. He asked me, “What’s his story, Haley? What was his family life like growing up?” I replied, “I don’t care! There’s no excuse for how he’s treating his family!” Knowing my blind spots, my supervisor encouraged me to listen to the dad.

In the next session, I half-heartedly gave him the opportunity to share. “Tell me about your home growing up.” He talked about his childhood and how great his dad was. I said, “It sounds like you’re really close to him.” He said, “I was, until he died of a heart attack when I was 11.” My heart sank. This man stopped growing emotionally when his heart broke as a child. He turned to drugs, music, and video games to escape reality. It was too painful for him. As he grew up, it was all he knew.  God gave me an opportunity to see past his selfishness to his broken heart that set him on his current course. I fell to the temptation to be angry at him – not his sin, but him. It may not have been a good excuse for his behavior now, but there was a reason – and I was initially too angry to consider it. He needed my help, not my condemnation.

What to do: Pray to see others through God’s eyes. When we see selfish and destructive behaviors that hurt others, we must look past their sin and see their need as Jesus did. What needs are they trying to meet? What pain are they trying to avoid? What actions are they using to cope? Anyone can see what’s wrong and judge, but God wants us to see what’s broken and bring it to Him to heal.

“The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.” (Psalm 145:8–9)

The Temptation of Pride

Helping others and seeing God change lives is an incredible blessing. It’s a high calling and sacred trust. As God works through us, people often come back to us with gratitude. “When you said that, it was just what I needed to hear. It made all the difference!”

Words of gratitude and compliments vary, but the temptation we face is the same: pride. I’m pretty great at this! If we take pride in our words, our wisdom, or in the ground gained in our client’s lives, we’ll lose our footing. We have no wisdom, no healing, no help in and of ourselves. God’s Word and His Spirit do the work. We are vessels. When we counsel others, and see God move in great ways, we get to glorify him first-hand – and we must avoid taking credit for the work of His hand.

What to do: Practice receiving gratitude. Genuinely receive it and direct it to God. “I’m excited to see how God is working in your life. He has done great things and I’m so thankful to get to be part of it with you.” Plan your response so you don’t forget where our help and healing come from – and fall to the temptation of taking credit for God’s work.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Uniabuja abduction victims rescued–Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says it has rescued all abducted victims of the university of Abuja and have reunited with their families through a joint operation with other security agencies.

Spokesperson of the Police Command Josephine Adeh confirmed the development in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that some armed criminals invaded the university’s Staff Quarters located at Giri community of the FCT in the early hours of Tuesday.

The hoodlums numbering more than 20 were said to have shot their way into the university staff quarters and whisked away their victims.

Earlier, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, on Thursday called on the Federal Government and security agencies for immediate rescue and release of all abducted members and staff of the university.

The chairperson of the branch, Dr Kasim Umar, who expressed concern about insecurity situation called for stringent and urgent measures to ensure safety in the community.

According to him, the Senior Staff Quarters were built by President Shehu Shagari’s administration as a police barracks at the inception of the university in 1988 and later converted to temporary accommodation for founding staff members of the university.(NAN)

Military On High Alert In Abuja Over Reports Of Planned Boko Haram/Bandits Attack On Capital (Photos)

Security operatives have been stationed to different locations in the Nation’s capital, FCT following reports of a planned attack by Boko Haram insurgents and bandits.

Security reports obtained by the Nigerian Army late Tuesday night, November 2, indicated that attackers were planning to enter the FCT through the Abuja-Keffi expressway and carry out attacks.

As at press time, troops have been placed on high alert and are deployed to strategic locations where they are mounting security checkpoints to monitor, prevent and arrest any potential attacker.

Photos on social media show soldiers have mounted roadblocks at all entry and exit points into the FCT, and are conducting stop and search operations on specific vehicles and passengers.

Motorists, especially those who live along the Abuja-Keffi expressway in areas like Kugbo, Karu, Jokwoyi, Orozo, Karshi, Nyanya, Mararaba, One-man village, Masaka, among other satellite towns, are finding it difficult traversing the road as a result of roadblocks mounted by soldiers .

This comes after the Tuesday morning invasion of the University of Abuja by bandits who abducted some staff members and their families.

How Instructional Technology Can Improve the Learning Process

Almost 90 years ago, an overhead projector was used to display images in a classroom for the first time. A few decades later, Texas Instruments invented the handheld calculator. In the 1980s, schools started introducing Apple Macintosh computers to the classroom. The ratio of computers to students in U.S. schools at the time was 1-to-92.

Today, technology is widespread among schools. Access to computers has become so ubiquitous that digital devices are replacing the use of pen and paper in many classrooms. While public opinion on the use of technology in schools has been divided, experts have found that technology has the ability to create profound changes in teaching and learning, creating opportunities for unprecedented collaboration, engagement, and support. The key is knowing how to use technology in meaningful ways—a skill some education degree programs are bringing to the forefront of their curricula.

What Is Instructional Technology?

Instructional technology is the theory and practice of using technology for education. Encompassing the design, development, use, management, and evaluation of technology in education, instructional technology can take many forms. Anything from electronic whiteboards to online courses or even virtual reality classrooms can be considered instructional technology.

While the applications and benefits of instructional technology vary widely, all instructional technology shares one main purpose: to create engaging and effective learning experiences. And many applications of instructional technology have proved effective at achieving this goal. Experts widely agree that instructional technology provides many benefits to the education process, including better access to information, more opportunities for collaboration, and better capabilities for meeting diverse learners’ needs.

The Role of Technology in Modern Classrooms

Just a couple of decades ago, teachers used very little (if any) technology in the classroom. Today, technology is a fundamental part of the education process. A recent study conducted by MidAmerica Nazarene University reports that students complete less than 42% of their work, both in and out of the classroom, using paper and pencil. In addition, the study found that 73% of teachers said that their students use tablets or laptops every day.

The increasing prevalence of technology in the classroom reflects a broader cultural shift. As the modern world becomes more digitized, tech literacy is becoming increasingly important. Teachers who use technology to support learning in meaningful ways can help prepare students for success in the digital era.

Uses of Instructional Technology

According to the U.S. Department of Education, schools can use educational technology to support both teaching and learning by infusing the classroom with valuable digital tools, expanding course offerings, increasing student engagement, and accelerating learning. Instructional technology offers nearly endless applications, but experts have identified three key areas where integrating technology can have a significant impact.

Collaborative Learning

Instructional technology provides unparalleled opportunities for collaborative learning. Advances in technology have made sharing information easier than ever before. Today, educators have access to digital tools that allow students to work collaboratively outside of the classroom, discussing ideas or completing projects remotely and eliminating constraints such as standard classroom hours or geographic location.

Instructional technology also provides opportunities for students to work collaboratively with teachers, discussing ideas or asking questions outside of the physical classroom. For example, teachers could hold digital office hours, making themselves available via instant messaging or video chat to support students as they tackle the day’s homework.

Virtual Classrooms and Online Learning

Virtual classrooms can be a useful tool at every level of education. One common challenge of the traditional classroom environment is that students learn at their own pace, so teachers need to find a way to tailor their lesson plans to the average learner, rather than addressing each student’s unique needs.

Online courses level the playing field and provide students with the time and resources to develop the skills they need. For example, students could listen to a lecture for a second time if they didn’t immediately grasp the subject matter or move ahead to the next one if they grasp a particular subject quickly. On top of this, online learning provides access to a wider array of topics, giving students opportunities to enrich their education by taking courses that their schools might not offer.

Real-Time Feedback

Instructional technology provides better capabilities for gathering or providing feedback compared with more traditional methods. Teachers can use a variety of digital tools to gauge where their students are in a particular lesson. For example, teachers might conduct an online survey of students’ current understanding of a topic to gain insight into where they should focus the next lesson. Or they might opt for using digital education software so they can provide immediate feedback to students on lessons and homework, which could help keep students on track with learning objectives. Some schools have even been piloting virtual reality classrooms, where teachers can rehearse lessons or work through professional challenges in an artificial environment, helping them hone their abilities without negatively impacting real students.

Learn More About Instructional Design

Technology in the classroom can have impressive benefits—but only if educators understand how to harness these new capabilities in meaningful ways. LSU Online’s Master of Arts in Education with a specialization in Educational Technology is designed specifically with this goal in mind. The program’s cutting-edge approach to technology integration, digital transformation, and online training helps teachers transform their expertise into innovative educational leadership.
