FULL LIST: FG releases approved subjects for basic, senior secondary education

The Federal Government has released the authentic and approved subject offerings for Nigeria’s newly revised Basic and Senior Secondary Education Curriculum, warning stakeholders against fake versions in circulation.

In a press release on Monday, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council said: “We fervently call on all critical stakeholders to disregard any other fake and unauthentic list that is at variance with the authentic and approved list provided above.”

The reforms, undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) under its National Education Sector Reform Initiatives (NESRI), are designed to reduce overload and ensure “positive learning outcomes” for pupils across the country.

The Executive Secretary of NERDC, Professor Salisu Shehu, signed the notice on 8th September 2025, confirming that implementation will begin at the start of each 3-year education circle (Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS1, and SS1).

The NERDC cautioned against misinformation, declaring: “nationwide sensitization and teacher capacity building have been slated to commence immediately for effective implementation.”

The Council assured that the reforms mark a new phase in Nigeria’s education sector, ensuring relevance, flexibility, and skill acquisition from the earliest stages of learning.

FG, stakeholders bicker

Meanwhile, the Federal Government, on September 1, said it had completed a comprehensive review of school curricula for basic, senior secondary and technical education aimed to make Nigerian learners “future-ready.”

Some teachers and parents have shown their criticism of the FG over the sudden introduction of the new national curriculum, saying they were not consulted in the process and warning that schools are ill-prepared for immediate implementation.

However, the FG insisted that the implementation of the new curriculum for basic, secondary, and technical education will begin with the 2025/2026 academic session.

Oluremi Tinubu Urges Stronger Action to Protect Schools in Nigeria

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger and collective efforts to safeguard education and protect schools nationwide, describing it as fundamental to securing the country’s future.

In a message commemorating the 2025 International Day to Protect Education from Attack, Senator Tinubu, a former teacher said the theme, “Challenging Narratives, Reshaping Action,” is a call to move beyond rhetoric and take bold, decisive steps to ensure the safety of learners, teachers, and institutions.

She stressed that “education must never be compromised,” warning that any society that fails to protect its schools risks undermining its own future.

The First Lady commended organisations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Education Above All Foundation for their work in promoting child education globally.

While acknowledging the contributions of Nigeria’s security agencies, she urged them to intensify efforts in protecting schools across the country.

PDP dead, buried, controlled by APC – Dino Melaye 9th September 2025

A former lawmaker representing Kogi West senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party is “dead and buried,” alleging that the party is now under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television, Melaye dismissed any hopes of revival for the opposition party, saying it no longer operates independently.

“Apart from our Lord Jesus Christ, no dead can rise again. PDP is dead and buried. The party was sold, and I’m not sure they even got the payment receipt. What you have now is an APC-controlled PDP,” he said.

Melaye, who previously contested under the PDP platform, accused unnamed agents of the APC of infiltrating and steering the affairs of the party from the presidential villa.

It is a party that has been controlled from the villa. I have said before that as far as we are concerned, it is the agents of the APC that control the PDP,” he added.

The former senator, however, stated that he is no longer a member of the PDP and has now pitched his tent with the African Democratic Congress which he described as the platform capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu’s APC government in the next general elections.

“I’m a proud member of the ADC, and by the grace of God, that is the party that will unseat Tinubu and send APC out of the villa come May 29, 2027,” Melaye stated.

While steering the discussion away from the PDP’s internal issues, Melaye urged Nigerians to focus on pressing national challenges.

“There are critical issues bedevilling this country: hunger, malnutrition, misgovernance, and maladministration. Those are the issues I think we should discuss, not a dead party,” he said.

2027 Presidency: Makinde, others to fight for PDP ticket

The Peoples Democratic Party’s 102nd National Executive Committee meeting resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, paving the way for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other southerners to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election.

The party’s NEC also upheld the current National Working Committee zoning formula for the November elective convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, and confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman.

Meanwhile, loyalists of the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, including Obidient Movement National coordinator Tanko Yunusa, said the former Anambra governor needs more time to reflect before deciding on his next political move.

But reacting to the zoning arrangement, the All Progressives Congress Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the PDP is destined for defeat in 2027, no matter who it fields as a presidential candidate or the region he represents..

In 2015, northern members opposed former President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting the presidential ticket should return to their region.

Their revolt contributed to the PDP’s defeat by the All Progressives Congress.

A repeat incident occurred in 2023, when five governors, led by then Rivers State Governor and now Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, alongside other leaders, opposed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy.

Although the zoning committee, chaired by then Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, had thrown the ticket open, they argued that after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight years, the South deserved consideration.

After Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal as National Chairman in 2023 by a court ruling, the North Central leaders demanded to fill the position, but their request was denied.

This fuelled the defection of key figures like former Senate President David Mark, Senator Dino Melaye, and ex-Benue Governor Gabriel Suswam to the opposition coalition, African Democratic Congress.

From 2015 to date, disputes over the zoning of the presidential ticket or NWC positions have repeatedly driven the PDP into crisis.

On Monday, the PDP’s 44-member zoning committee, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, presented its report to the 102nd NEC.

Addressing journalists after the NEC meeting in Abuja, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, disclosed that the decision followed the presentation of a report by the Zoning Commit

tee chaired by Governor Diri.

Ologunagba added that the NEC also expressed satisfaction over the level of preparedness of the PDP’s various organs, chapters and structures for the 2025 Elective National Convention scheduled for Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, on November 15 to 16, 2025.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, while reading the 102nd NEC communiquΓ©, said the meeting commended the efforts of PDP governors, Board of Trustees, NWC, the National Assembly Caucus, and other party organs toward the success of the 2025 National Convention.

The communique read in part, “NEC received and, after extensive deliberation, approved the report of the National Convention Zoning Committee, which recommended that all PDP National Office positions currently in the Northern region of the country remain in the Northern region.

“That all PDP National Office positions currently in the Southern region of the country remain in the Southern region.

“That having retained the position of the National Chairman in the Northern region of the country, the Presidential candidate of the party for the 2027 general election is hereby zoned to the Southern region.

“That the regions should immediately micro-zone positions within their region for implementation. NEC also received an update from the PDP Constitution Amendment Committee and directed the Committee to circulate the Draft Constitution Amendment to various organs and chapters of the Party for further inputs.”

Ologunagba said NEC confirmed Umar Damagum as substantive National Chairman, effective Monday, August 25, 2025, in recognition of his role in stabilising the party, pending the National Convention.

He added, “NEC condemns the resort by the APC to state capture through state-backed intimidation, manipulation, inducement, coercion and violence against Nigerians as witnessed in the APC’s muzzling of the recent bye-elections in parts of the country.

“NEC particularly expressed dismay and condemned the militarisation of the recent bye-elections, especially in Kaduna and Taraba States, as well as Zamfara State, where excessive security agencies were deployed in the conduct of the run-off election in only five polling units in Kaura Namoda South state constituency.

“NEC declares that this action by the APC is a confirmation of the APC’s desire to turn our country into a totalitarian one-party state, which is a clear and present danger to democracy and the corporate existence of our country.

“NEC reassures Nigerians of PDP’s commitment to Democracy and the defence of the interests and well-being of all citizens as we work hard to further reposition our party to regain power in  PDP’s 2027 presidential ticket from the South.

He stated, “Nigerians are looking up to the PDP not only as the strongest opposition party but as the only credible alternative, capable of restoring hope, equity, and justice to the Nigerian people.

“The confidence reposed in us is a reminder of the weight of responsibility we carry as a party and of the need to remain united and disciplined as we march towards the future.

“From one convention to the next, the PDP has consistently shown that internal democracy, inclusivity, and respect for collective decision-making remain our guiding principles.

“This NEC, therefore, stands at a defining moment as we prepare for the next National Convention, where the leadership that will steer our party into the 2027 elections will emerge.

“Please, be assured that I believe every member of the current National Working Committee remains deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve this party faithfully these past years as we approach our fourth anniversary.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said party leaders were making strong efforts to win back the trust of Nigerians.

The governor noted, “We are really navigating the temptations and also some of the challenges that most of you are aware of, the challenges even within the National Working Committee, so that we can cautiously and cleverly navigate to convention.

“All the remaining issues of the various congresses have been resolved by the Working Committee with the help of the governors and other elders.

“Today, I would say that all the communication to INEC has been signed by our National Working Committee and that we don’t have any determining issue. So, we are navigating and we are working very well, and of course, we will do our best to ensure that this party remains united.”

The PDP BoT chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said the hopes of millions of Nigerians rest on the party’s ability to rebuild, reconcile, and position itself ahead of 2027.

Represented by the BoT secretary, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Wabara stressed that for the PDP to succeed in 2027, the members must embrace three key principles: unity and progress, sacrifice, and reconciliation with inclusion.

He added, “Once again, the hopes of millions of sovereign Nigerians are tied to our collective capacity to build to reconcile and to position this party ahead of 2027.

“However, if we are to succeed in 2027, we must embrace three truths: first, on the question of unity and progress. Unity is not a mere slogan. Rather, it is the lifeblood of any political organisation. Without unity, progress is stunted. Without unity, victory is elusive.

With the new zoning arrangement, the path now appears clearer for Makinde, Obi, and other southerners interested in the ticket.

In his earlier remarks, Damagum noted that since the last PDP NEC meeting, the party had remained resilient and focused despite the count

ry’s daunting challenges.

“Our strength has always been drawn from our diversity, our ability to disagree without division and to reconcile in the interest of the greater good. As elders, leaders and members of the party, we must once again rise to that standard.

“Secondly, the spirit of sacrifice; we must be honest with ourselves. Reclaiming victory in 2027 will demand more than rhetoric. It will demand sacrifice in exchange for the collective interest of the party and, more importantly, the Nigerian people.”

He lamented that the nation is in distress and citizens are suffering, stressing that Nigerians look to the PDP to provide relief, restore hope, and deliver healing leadership.

“This burden of expectation should inspire us to give our best and even more for the sake of our nation.

“Third, reconciliation and inclusion; we know that over time, some of our members, due to one grievance or another, have strayed away, in self-imposed exile.

“Today, as elders of the party, we must extend a hand of the new reconciliation. This does not mean abandoning our principles.”

Reacting to the PDP NEC resolutions, Wike said he was vindicated by the decision to zone the presidency to the South and the chairmanship to the North.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike noted that the PDP had acknowledged the mistake made in 2022 and was now correcting it in 2025.

The statement read in part, “Recall that the FCT minister and the G-5 had insisted that the presidential candidate of the PDP and its National Chairman must not remain in the same zone, insisting that since Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, from the North had emerged as the presidential candidate, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, also from the North, must resign to pave the way for a National Chairman from the South.

“Ayu, however, insisted on not resigning, with Atiku and his group backing him. The aftermath of this was the electoral misfortune the party suffered in 2023, followed by instability after the elections.

“But today, the NEC resolved that since the National Chairman of the party is zoned to the North, the PDP 2027 presidential ticket be zoned to the South. Has PDP not come back to eat its own vomit?

“Sadly, they know the truth. Wike simply said, ‘take the chairmanship to the South if you want to gain the Presidency,’ but they said no, they must take the two, and the PDP lost.

“They have realised the mistake they made in 2022 and are correcting it in 2025. But is it not too late already, bearing in mind that the only way the zoning can be justified is for the South to conclude its eight years, while the Presidency returns to the North in 2031?”

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, would need time to decide to return to the PDP fold or not in pursuant of his presidential ambition in 2027, the National Coordinator, Obidient Movement, Tanko Yunusa, said.

Obi has held several meetings in recent times with top opposition figures, including Atiku and the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum.

50yrs old woman Pregnancy-faking widow nabbed with cocaine in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 50-year-old widow and fashion designer, Mrs. Ifeoma Henrietta Ezewuike, for attempting to traffic 1.3 kilograms of cocaine using a fake pregnancy disguise.

Ezewuike, who runs a fashion outfit, Golden Star Creation, in the Okota area of Lagos, was apprehended at a bus terminal in Jibowu, Yaba, on Friday, while attempting to deliver the drug consignment to customers in Abuja.

A statement by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said a follow-up operation at her residence in Ago Palace Way, Okota, led to the recovery of 200 grams of cutting agent used in processing cocaine.

Babafemi said in her statement to investigators that Ezewuike, a mother of one, claimed she inherited the drug trade from her late husband, who died two years ago, despite being in the fashion business for over 20 years.

“A 50-year-old widow and fashion designer, Mrs. Ifeoma Henrietta Ezewuike, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency over an attempt to traffic 1.3 kilograms of cocaine, using fake pregnancy as a faΓ§ade to escape scrutiny and detection.

“The widow who is a mother of one and proprietress of Golden Star Creation, a fashion outfit in Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos, was arrested at a bus terminal in the Jibowu, Yaba area of the state on Friday, August 22, 2025, while attempting to move the cocaine consignment to customers in Abuja.

“A follow-up operation at her house in the Ago Palace Way area led to the recovery of 200 grams of cutting agent used in the production of a strain of cocaine. In her statement, Ezewuike claimed she inherited the criminal trade from her husband, who died two years ago, while she has been in the fashion business for 20 years,” the statement partly read.

In related operations, Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives intercepted 90 parcels of Loud, a strain of cannabis weighing 48.6kg, concealed in three cartons of kitchen sinks imported from the United States.

“No fewer than 90 parcels of Loud, a strain of cannabis weighing 48.6kg, imported from the United States of America and concealed in three cartons of kitchen sink, were intercepted at a courier company in Lagos on Tuesday, August 19, by the NDLEA officers of the Directorate of Operation and General Investigation,” Babafemi said.

In Adamawa, he said the NDLEA operatives acting on credible intelligence on Friday raided the home of a notorious drug dealer, Idris Garba, who scaled the fence to escape arrest, while one of his associates, Boniface Nnaji, 55, who attempted the same, was caught in the act at the Rumde Baru area of Yola South.

“Recovered from the premises include a black Toyota Thundra jeep marked FST- 885-CZ driven to Yola by Nnaji to supply Garba 354,480 pills of tramadol 225mg, 250mg and others as well as a Toyota Yaris car with registration number DSA 776 AA, “ he added.

In Kano, Babafemi said the duo of Buhari Ibrahim, 25, and Mansur Musa, 24, were nabbed at Zangon Ungogo, with 5,850 capsules of pregabaline on Tuesday, August 19, while a total of 452,070 pills of opioids were recovered from the home of a suspect, Rabilu Mukhtar, who is at large, at Rangaza, Ungogo LGA, just as Buhari Idris, 35, was arrested at the Tashan Rami area of the state with 140 litres of codeine syrup, both on the same Tuesday.

“No fewer than 7,000 capsules of tramadol were seized from Adamu Yusuf, 29, along Zaria-Kano road, Kwanar Dangora area of the state on Saturday,” he added.

In Abuja, he said two dispatch riders were arrested for distributing illicit substances.

According to the statement, similar crackdowns were recorded in Taraba, Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti states, where the NDLEA teams destroyed large cannabis farms and warehouses.

‘We must act now to save Nigeria’ — Aregbesola as Lagos PDP, LP stakeholders join ADC

Aregbesola

Aregbesola

Former Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, on Saturday declared that urgent action is needed to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges, as stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and other groups in Lagos formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking at the affirmation ceremony in Lagos, Aregbesola welcomed the new entrants into the ADC, describing the development as a bold step towards building a viable political alternative for Nigerians.

Recalling the 1983 address of Chief Obafemi Awolowo at the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) Congress, Aregbesola said history has always shown that failed political orders eventually give way to new ones. He explained that the Hegelian notion of thesis, antithesis and synthesis reflects the inevitability of change in governance when leaders fail to meet the needs of the people.

According to him, insecurity, poverty, and the rising cost of living have pushed Nigerians into despair, with many families unable to afford medical care or basic food.

He said, “Across the nation, the spectre of insecurity looms large as sundry criminals lay siege on the people, making economic and social activities nearly impossible. People now live in mortal fear for their lives and property.

“Medical services, and especially drugs, have become so exorbitant that many of the sick are left waiting to die—unless a miracle comes their way.

“The cost of living is so high that starvation is literally stalking the land. Those who are a little more comfortable are being overwhelmed by requests for assistance from the needy in our society.”

He warned that any government, whether democratic, military or authoritarian, that neglects the welfare of its citizens would eventually collapse under the weight of public frustration.

“There is a limit to how much the people can be squeezed and pushed before something eventually gives,” he cautioned.

Aregbesola stressed that the mission of the ADC is to serve as the vehicle through which citizens can reclaim political power and redirect governance towards the welfare of the people. “This is why our mission is urgent and our intervention has become absolutely necessary. We must act now to save the nation,” he said.

The former Osun State governor expressed optimism over the growing support for the ADC, noting that politicians and citizens across divides are trooping into the party. He described the surge of interest as a sign that Nigerians are determined to embrace a new Nigeria.
