Biden to end use of private prisons for US federal inmates

US President Joe Biden is taking steps to end the use of private prisons by the Department of Justice to house federal inmates, officials said Tuesday. Susan Rice, Biden’s Domestic Policy Advisor, said the president will sign an executive order later on Tuesday directing the department not to renew contracts with private prisons.

“Private prisons profiteer off of federal prisoners and are proven to be, or found to be, by the Department of Justice inspector general, to be less safe for correctional officers and for prisoners,” Rice told reporters at a White House briefing.

“President Biden is committed to reducing mass incarceration while making our communities safer,” she said. “That starts with ending the federal government’s reliance on private prisons.” The move to stop using private prisons to house federal inmates is one of several criminal justice reforms proposed by Biden.

Biden has pledged to reduce mass incarceration in the United States and the disproportionate number of minorities behind bars. Ending the use of private prisons to house federal inmates would have only a limited impact. Only 116,000 of the more than two million prisoners in the United States are housed in private prisons — seven per cent of those held by the states and 16 per cent of those held in federal prisons.

Private prison operators first emerged in the United States in the 1980s when the prison population began to explode, notably because of the war on drugs.

Towards the end of his presidency, Barack Obama also sought to do away with federal use of private prisons but Donald Trump increased their use and even extended it to the detention of illegal immigrants. The executive order to be signed by Biden would not concern those facilities.

Why Many Nigerians Want Yahaya Bello As President In 2023 – Fanwo

Nigerians across the walks of life are begging Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello to contest for Presidency in 2023 because they have seen his good works and purposeful leadership in Kogi and they want him to replicate it across the country.

Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications stated this on Monday in an interview with Daily Independent.

He said many of the various groups drumming support for the governor have seen how he united the all the tribes in Kogi and also addressed the various security challenges in the state.

“When Governor Yahaya Bello came, Kogi was a balkanised state. There were ethnic divisions, distrust and disunity. Upon assumption of office, he said he was going to unite Kogi state and he has matched his words with practical actions that have united the state today”.

“When you look at the security situation in the state before he came, we were having an average of seven kidnap cases on daily basis. Today, it is possible to go for six months without a single kidnap case. What he did to contain insecurity was to use local solutions for a global problem by ensuring that the vigilante service was put in place.

“There was a law before he came to establish Kogi State Vigilante Service, but nobody cared about it. When he came, he ensured that he implemented that law by setting up the Kogi State Vigilante Service. They are doing a great job. We are also using hunters to complement what these people are doing”.

“They understand the terrain, they can give direction to the Police, Army and other conventional security agencies. It is something that has worked well in Kogi state and that is why we have this success story which has won the governor a lot of awards across the nation”.

“Nigerians are looking at these two things. There is still disunity in the country today. That’s why we are having the agitation for zoning of presidency. That is an indication of disunity. Yahaya Bello can unite Nigeria. He has done it in Kogi state and we are confident that it could be replicated at the national level”.

He also said various security challenges confronting the country such as insurgency, banditry and kidnapping will be resolved by Bello if elected president.

“Then when you look at other problems of the country which insecurity, insurgency, banditry and all of that, he has done it in Kogi state and we know that he can do it at the centre.

“Those who are agitating have seen all of these in him. Also, his fearless approach to the issue of COVID-19 has reassured Nigerians that we could have leaders who could decide to beat the established rule of deceit and stand firm with the people.

“Nigerians know that if this man becomes president, then they will have a leader who will protect their interests. That is the reason why a lot of Nigerians are begging him to run in 2023”.

5 Ways to Grow Closer to God in 2021

Ready for a new year?
This past year gave us a chance to slow down, look closely at our lives, and re-evaluate what truly matters to us.
Growth may take time, but there are biblical tools that can help us embrace God’s best as we seek Him daily.
Today, prepare for a new season by discovering 5 ways to build healthy habits that will help you stay focused on Jesus.

We’ve all acquired patterns of behavior that form the basis of our daily routines. But what happens when our daily routines are suddenly changed? After spending a year embracing uncertainty, how do we start to move forward?

The beginning of 2021 is the perfect time to reset our minds, look closely at our habits, and prepare our hearts for what God is going to do next.

Here are 5 ways to do that:

1. Set aside time with God every day. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

JEREMIAH 29:13

Start rebuilding healthy habits by making time with God your top priority. When you prioritize time with Him, you allow Him to renew your mind and change the way you think.

One tool you can use to create a daily quiet time routine is Verse of the Day Stories. Start your day with a Story and get into the habit of letting God’s Word speak to you.

Ask yourself: At what times of day do I find it easiest and hardest to connect with God?

2. Fix your eyes on Jesus
Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

HEBREWS 12:1-2

Keeping Jesus at the center of your life will help you lay aside anything that might easily entangle you, and eventually, this practice will change the way you live.

So today, take a moment to think about what might be keeping you from focusing entirely on Jesus. Try creating a Prayer in your Bible App and list the distractions you want to surrender. Then, set up a Prayer reminder to help you give those distractions over to Jesus every day.

Ask yourself: What desires are keeping me from centering my life completely around Jesus?

3. Remember Whose you are You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20

Everything you’ve sacrificed this past year will never compare to the ultimate sacrifice God made for you. So when you begin to grow discouraged, remember that God is eternally invested in your life. Your future is in the hands of Someone who loves you, and He wants you to become the person He created you to be.

Ask yourself: What habits will help me glorify God more?

4. Start small
One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.

LUKE 16:10

Growth takes time, so just pick something small you’d like to change, and start there. Consistently doing one thing well will make it easier to master other habits later. And if you miss a day (or five), give yourself grace. Starting small makes it easier to pick yourself back up and keep moving forward.

Ask yourself: What is one thing I can start to master?

5. Invite others to join you
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

PROVERBS 27:17

We weren’t meant to go through life alone. You’ll find it easier to stay on track if you invite some friends to join you on your journey. Try finding a Bible Plan you’d like to read, and then commit to processing each Plan day together.

Ask yourself: What trusted friends can I invite to join me?

As you keep developing healthy habits, over time you will find yourself becoming more like the person God created you to be.

It only takes a moment to get going, and these 5 steps are a great place to start. Pick the number you want to focus on first, and then stay committed to moving forward by applying this bonus step…

Set Reminders to help you pursue what matters most.
Reminders are perfect for the times when you need some extra encouragement to continue to build good habits. And by setting up Bible App reminders, you’ll always have a way to stay connected to God’s Word and His will for you.

117th US Congress Prayer Ends With "Amen And A Woman"

'It's got nothing to do with gender': Democrat Emanuel Cleaver is slammed for ending his 'woke' Congress prayer by saying 'Amen and a woman'

*Emanuel Cleaver delivered a prayer on Sunday to open the 117th Congress

*In his message, he referenced Hindu God *Brahma and said 'amen and a woman'

Many criticized the 'woke' prayer, saying 'amen' is Latin for 'so be it'

*A committee has proposed changes in house rules to 'honor gender identities'

Democrat Representative Emanuel Cleaver has provoked fury by closing a congressional prayer with the words 'amen and a woman'.

The Missouri pastor was asked to deliver the prayer to open the 117th Congress on Sunday, and decided to make a gender neutral address.

But after the video was posted online, many pointed out to Cleaver that amen is Latin for 'so be it' and has no reference to gender.

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler said on Twitter: 'It's not a gendered word.

'Unfortunately, facts are irrelevant to progressives. Unbelievable.'

Cleaver also mentioned the Hindu god Brahma as he gave his prayer to Congress.

He said: 'We ask it in the name of the monotheistic God, Brahma, and "god" known by many names by many different faiths.'

'Amen and a woman.'

Attempted R a p e: Abiodun Abudu-Balogun Denies S e x u a l Harassment Allegation. Watch Video...

Ogun commissioner denies sexual harassment allegation in viral video

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Abiodun Abudu-Balogun, has denied any involvement in sexual harassment as alleged in a viral video circulating on social media.

In the video which went viral on January 1, a 16-year-old secondary school student identified as Barakat Mayowa alleged that the commissioner had se.xually harassed her when she visited his home on December 31, 2020, in Ibiade town, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state.

Mayowa alleged that she had gone to the commissioner’s house in the company of her uncle, Mr Lasisi Saheed aka Mayor, who had informed her that the commissioner was searching for computer literates for employment.

She stated that it was while she was with the commissioner that he had attempted to rape her and was only let go after resisting and threatening to shout out for the help.

Commissioner Abudu-Balogun has however in a statement he personally signed on Saturday described the allegation as a lie and ‘political blackmail’ from his adversaries.

Abudu-Balogun, a former member of the House of Representatives, said that he has used his position to empower young people and not to se.xually harass or molest them.

His statement reads:

‘On this said day, the girl was brought to my house by one of my loyalists who is her uncle, to assist her get a job as a Computer Operator at the ICT Centre I facilitated while I was serving as a member of House of Representatives years back, which has been moribund but I am about to rehabilitate in order to empower more youths in our local government.

‘I met her at my sitting room for few minutes where many of my loyalists were, people that came to visit me for the New Year. I chatted with the lady for a few minutes and as part of my usual gesture, I gave her some amount of money for her transportation.

‘A day after, I was informed by some people that I have been alleged to have attempted to se.xually harrass the girl and I should invite the family for a meeting so as to settle the matter amicably. It was after my refusal to yield to their threats that they went ahead to make a teleguided video leading the lady on what to say to implicate me. This is purely political blackmail by my adversaries.

‘Let me state emphatically that I never attempted to se.xually harass anyone. I, therefore, plead with my fans and loyalists to be calm and not engage anyone on the said matter as it is being handled by the police and my legal team.’

Don Davis' Medical Report Silent On Sexual Abuse At Deeper Life High School

A medical report on the victim of the alleged sexual abuse at Deeper Life High School, Uyo, has not stated if the 11-year-old boy has been sexually molested or not.

The boy, a JSS1 student of the school, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday after spending ten days.

The victim’s father, Iniobong Archibong, who got the medical report from the hospital on Monday, said he would only disclose the content after consultation with his lawyer.

A source, who has seen the medical report, told PREMIUM TIMES, Wednesday, the report did not mention whether the boy was sexually abused or not.

“The report is shallow, it only stated that the boy has tested negative to HIV, and that he was pale and emaciated when he was brought to the hospital, and also that he has been treated for malaria,” the source said.

The boy was examined and treated at St. Athanasius Hospital, a private medical facility in Uyo.

“In physical examination, you need to watch which area was molested and this one they are thinking of the anus, which that report has shown that there was no injury seen,” Emmanuel Akpanobong, the medical director, St. Athanasius Hospital, told PREMIUM TIMES, Wednesday morning, when asked why the report did not state clearly if the boy was sexually abused or not.

Mr Akpanobong, a medical doctor, said tests were done to ascertain if the boy had any infection. Outside of that, he said the doctors were not “magician” to verify what happened to the boy while he was at the dormitory. “We rely on the physical findings which is what we reported there,” he added.

“In fact, if a girl is molested, especially a virgin, you need to look for the evidence of recent issues, you look for the damage to the hymen which, even in most cases, if a rape or whatever had taken place and the person has had bath, has done normal things thereafter, the evidence maybe obscured.

“(It is) the same thing here. In fact, one would have expected that if the molestation was done that very day and maybe there is evidence of contamination – smearing with semen and all that. But these were not available at the time of seeing the child,” Mr Akpanobong said. The victim’s parents are likely to consult other physicians for a “thorough” medical examination on their son, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

Allegations The victim’s mother, Deborah Okezie, said some senior students of the Deeper Life High School sexually abused her son when the school authorities switched him from his dormitory to another dormitory filled with senior students.

“They will remove his boxer and push their legs and hands into his anus,” Mrs Okezie said in a video which has gone viral on Facebook and Twitter.

“Look at a child I sent to school, he came back with a broken anus,” she added.

Mrs Okezie said her son was frequently starved and beaten up by the senior students. The Deeper Life High School is owned by a Pentecostal church, The Deeper Christian Life Ministry.

The school trended on Twitter on Monday, with several Nigerians calling on William Kumuyi, a pastor and founder of The Deeper Christian Life Ministry, to ensure that the victim gets justice.

“We will like to state that Deeper Life High School stands on the core values of integrity and uprightness and will not attempt to cover up any immoral act under any guise,” Thelma Malaka, the school’s education secretary, who spoke through a video uploaded on Twitter, Tuesday, said of the sexual abuse allegation.

“We have unflinching confidence in our God to resolve the issue such that at the end the truth will ultimately prevail,” she said. The school suspended the principal of its Uyo campus and launched an investigation into the allegation.

But the school said on Tuesday that it is waiting for a release of the report of the Akwa Ibom State government’s investigation into the matter.
